New Honda Accord Diesel May Reach 60 MPG
Although Honda will not be offering a hybrid version of their 08' Accord, there is rumor they might offer a very fuel efficient diesel model. The new clean diesel engine, based on the current 2.2 i-CTDi, may be capable of fuel efficiencies in the range of 50-60 mpg, while being just as clean as a typical gasoline engine. The new 2.2 diesel engine was actually showcased at a diesel technology convention in California.
According to Autocar.com, the diesel engine burns clean enough to meet U.S. emission standards by using a catalytic converter to reduces nitrogen oxide output through conversion to ammonia. The ammonia may then be used to further neutralize the remaining NOx material. The new '08 Accord should be available in the U.S. this September.
